Virtuous, yes. But what about the manufacture and transportation of the bike and parts? I love cycling, but know that my Thomson stem was not CNC'ed here in Arizona.
You've raised a good point. Cycling stuff is no different from any other category of manufactured goods: The parts/bikes must be shipped and that means fossil fuel. The answer, or mine at least, is to buy second-hand. I get the vast majority of my cycling stuff used, with the obvious exception being tires and tubes.
